Around Town: A Pictorial Review of Old Fincastle, Virginia is a lovely hardbound book developed and published in 1990. The second edition was printed in 2008. It is sometimes referred to as the history “Bible” of Fincastle that was made possible through the hard work of eight HFI volunteers. “Around Town” offers the reader a charming visual history of Fincastle. It brings back the many memories of by-gone days in this quaint Western Virginia hamlet. Preserved on the pages are buildings that no longer stand and settings that have been altered by modernization. This collection attempts to fill a void by picturing a variety of houses and buildings from the 1770-1900 periods. Churches, hotels, mills, and stores-every facet of life in the old town are included. The book committee of Historic Fincastle, Inc. reviewed hundreds of photographs to select those included in the book. Beyond the structures, there are scenes of everyday commerce and community life, accompanied by text rich in the detail of Fincastle, VA’s gentle history.
